Top Tips to Protect Your Dog’s Paws From Hot Pavements

Dog owners love taking their dogs out for a walk especially in the warm summer weather. During the summer break, people have more time on their hands to enjoy with their pets. Before you take your dog out for a few hours, remember that the hot summer pavements burn your dog’s paws. If you are not careful, your dog can end up with serious paw burns. It is especially worse if your dog is a puppy. Asphalt cement, metal pavement, and sand heat up and could burn your puppy’s paw pads. Here are some tips on how to keep your dog’s paws safe during hot summers.

Walk Your Dog When It Is Cool Outside

No matter how tempting it is for you to take your dog everywhere with you during summer, only walk them when it is a bit cool outside. Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures have gone down. Some dog breeds such as pugs are prone to heatstroke.

Avoid Walking on Hot Surfaces

Dogs like to run everywhere when you take them outside. When going on a stroll, stay on the grass. Avoid walking on hot surfaces such as concrete, metal, or sand. Take your dog to a park or an indoor play area where they can enjoy without injuring their paws. If you must walk on hot pavement, pick them up, and carry them on your arms.

Invest in a Paw Wax

Apply paw wax on your dog’s paws before leaving the house. You can find a good brand of paw wax at your local pet store. Smear a good amount of paw wax on your dog’s feet when going for a stroll. It protects his feet from serious burns. Keep your dog’s paws moisturized even in the cooler months. This softens the paws and makes them more flexible.

Watch Out for Abnormal Signs

When it’s hot outside, the pavement can burn the paw pads right off your dog and give him nasty wounds. Watch your dog for abnormal behavior. If your dog suddenly shows discomfort while walking, check the pavement. The dog may try to hop away from the surface to warn you. If you suspect that the pavement may be too hot, avoid walking your dog on it.

Get a Doggy Stroller

If you must take your dog out in the heat for a long time, get a dog stroller. Keep the dog in the stroller until you can find a safe spot to let him out for exercise and bathroom breaks. For small dogs, you can use a dog purse or carry them in your arms.

Get Doggy Footwear

You would be surprised to know that you can get cute shoes and socks for your dog. Doggy shoes and socks come in all sizes and cute colors. They have a rubber sole to protect your dog’s paws from burning. The dogs may feel uncomfortable in the shoes or socks at first, but they quickly get used to them.
